Planetfall Unboxing - RSN Assault Helix

Quite some time ago I acquired the RSN Assault Helix for Planetfall, but with a busy summer it's had to wait until now for airing.

Opening the box we are greeted with the usual Spartan bubble bags, and there's not much space left inside!

Eager as ever to get our hands on the actual resin, the little bags don't resist for long...

We'll start with the smallest elements first, since they're single piece (though very well executed) - the light tanks. You get six of them in the set.

These are nice little models, and I love the way they are very similar in several aspects to the old Dindrenzi Daggers from Firestorm invasion.

So, these are nice models, but they're not why you've bought this set, am I right? Next is the Temple of Dramos.... (just placed together here...not glued!)

Now I'm in two minds about this model...I'm really not sure if I like it or not. It's very thematic, but it plays to one element of the RSN which has always been a fringe one, and it seems a bit too impractical in many ways for them - their ships in Firestorm are not fetishised in any way, yet here you have a combat model which has large sculpted angels on it....it's cool, but I'm just not sure how it sits with me...I'm firmly "on the fence"!

The model itself is made of several pieces

The base (here it's upside-down)

The legs/stands...four of them that fit onto the underside of the base element...

...like so

 Turning the base over, you have two areas for the vertical sections

Which are here, and fit in place....

..like so

You then have the Dramos Angel statue piece, hcih sits between them....

...here it's just placed on top, it actually sits flush - but be careful that you mount it at the same time as the vertical sections, as the angles on the sides mean you can't put it in place if you glue the sides on first.

But you probably didn't buy this set for the temple either - even if you love it. What you probably bought the set for is...

The Avenging Robot! Yes, this Gundam-esque beast is the real reason you bought the RSN Assault Helix. It's a stylised human-robot with wings, missiles and a big sword. It's a combination of resin and metal, and it has a degree of being posable.

The chest section is slightly iron-man, with a central piece very mush like a power core and thick armour plates.

The head is white metal, and very stylised, which I like. The ball and socket jointing allows this to be put at almost any angle

The arms are both single piece, reducing the flexibility of poses somewhat but I think anything else would have made the model too fiddly. The Left arm comes with a cluster-rocket pack.

The right with the huge sword (which I think is a leviathan CQB weapon)

The legs are also one-piece, though these and the arms are all ball and socket jointed to the body, allowing a lot of variation in build. The legs contain rocket motors, and I like the feet that have flipped back into "flight mode"...it would be nice to see some variant arms and legs in future for variation too - a standing version would be cool.

Finally, the wings and flight stand insert are white metal pieces that both attach to the central body, and both have some variation - the flight peg holder is ball and socketed, so you can have your robot flying in different ways, and the wings and scored to allow them to be bent back slightly at an angle (be careful though a the last thing you want to do is snap them!).

I've already assembled mine and sprayed it gold - this is a statement by the RSN of man's supremacy, to hearten its allies to fight and to strike terror into the hearts of the alien scum that oppose it! I'm looking forward to finishing it....now tell me how many grown men are going to be doing the exact same thing, and then flying it around their games room making pew pew noises?!?

Sneak Peak of Return of the Overseers ships....

I spent Saturday with Neil at the SG office for a long overdue catch up about all things Firestorm (plus Planetfall and a few other bits and pieces!). One of the things we had a look over were some of the new ships in resin for the Return of the Overseers 2-player box that will be out in the New Year. He was quite happy for me to give all you FA fans out there a sneak preview of some of the first castings...

So first up we have the Oannes, the new Aquan Heavy Carrier. After working on the stats for this for the last 6 months or so, and having seen the renders for almost that time too, the Oannes surprised me with its sheer size - it's a monster! Here it is with a Maelstrom Battleship.

And the underside;

You can't see it well here, but the underside is scalloped in, making the Oannes look very sleek and fast.

 Overall, she's probably one of my favourite Aquan ships ever.

Another of the new Aquan ships is the Sulis, a rather different Heavy Cruiser from the previous stock. The Sulis utilises the standard cruiser body, but the add-on dwarfs and shields that;

Here you can see the large redirection crystal:

Of course, on the other side we have the Directorate, and we have an impressively large slab of resin in the form of the Anarchist Battleship:

This doesn't have its cyberwarfare turret, but you get the idea.

Underneath she has dedicated broadsides

Whereas up-front she has multiple bay doors for SRS...

I'm quite excited to field this one!

I also spotted a few other ships awaiting release....any RSN fans? Starting with the humble (but deadly) escort, the Siren - this got a bit of a makeover in the transition to 100% resin - definately an improvement.

The other small is of course the frigate:

The Destroyer is also very close to the older casting, but completely resin;

Last ship I have to show today is the Heavy Cruiser

Well, that's it for now, hope you enjoyed that sneak peek of upcoming resin for 2015!

Linked Mines...and tokens!

So I posted on the forums quite some time ago about the issues with mines in FSA - they're a rather weak weapon system that (at least in the original ship calculator) cost quite a bit more than the results you'd expect out of a similar weapon system. One idea I had was to allow a squadron of ships to link mines exactly as they can link fire - so 3 Mn4 cruisers could combine to lay a single Mn8 mine. This would be considerable more of a deterrent to larger ships than however many Mn4 mines, and provide ships armed with mines some tactical flexibility.

In order to properly try this out I'd need some appropriate counters, and rather than using dice (d6, d8 or d10), I thought about making some counters to easily distinguish between races and accomodate the values possible with their squadrons linking - for instance Terrans only have ships with mines that don't form squadrons, so they ONLY have Mn4 mines. Aquans, on the other hand, can produce an Mn10 counter from a squadron of cruisers...a real threat!

So, if anyone else fancies trying out linked mines, here are the counters in a PDF document.

Happy gaming!

RSN Rising...

A couple of weeks ago I managed to get a couple of Spook Cruisers and a Spectre battleship to add to my Phoenixes, Bulwarks, Sirens and Banshee. None of these are yet painted, though all are primed and I've tried out a scheme I didn't really take to on a Bulwark. The RSN are the extreme end of the Dindrenzi scale, originators of the split from Terra and a bit fanatical. Some people refer to them as "space Nazis", which I think is somewhat misplaced, but actually - in terms of colours - it gaev me an idea...

My Dindrenzi fleet is based around Black, white, grey and orange - taking a lead from the District 9 alien ship colours. I wanted the Dindrenzi ships to be bold and making a statement - they believe they are the rightful inheritors of the galaxy, the cutting edge of humanity...they're not going to be very bland! With all the advanced equipment of the 38th century, unless you go to nano-scale cloaking (as the relthoza do), you might as well make a statement with your ships livery, right?

Which brings me back to the RSN and 1930s German political parties. The one thing th Nazis succeeded at above all else was propoganda - really in a way it had never been done before. The bold red, white and black of its symbology was instantly recognisable. This combination of colours has always been a powerful one, and I wanted to use it for my RSN - in a way that would complement my Dindrenzi fleet so they would look like brothers in arms (which they are).

Of course, my Relthoza are red, so I don't want to create a similar looking fleet.I've taken some side/front/rear/top photos of the ships so I can play around in a painting packge to decide on a scheme...until then, any suggestions are welcomed!

Marauder of the Rift - RSN Report

Well it's been a while since I've had time to post anything, been busy with work, the house, helping friends etc, so any extra time on the PC has been spent in other ways than on here. Of course, I could have been putting stuff on here as well, but it's so easy to put off to another day, then suddenly you find yourself with so many things to post!

Anyway, penned this the other night after reading some of the MotR Campaign guide for FSA, and thought I'd stick it on here;

RSN Report

Enjoy!
